Lake St George State Park

278 Belfas Augusta Rd
04949, Liberty
Maine, Stati Uniti d'America

Lake St. George State Park is located 16 miles west of Belfast and 25 miles west of Augusta on the northwest shore of the beautiful Lake St. George. State Route 3 ran parallel and close to the lake, which was originally part of a farmstead. The centerpiece of the park is Lake St. George itself. Some of the park's campsites are located right on the shoreline where a morning cup of coffee can be enjoyed while watching the sun rise over the crystal clear water. Loons are frequent visitors and their signature call can often be heard at night. The lake is 1,017 acres and numerous undeveloped islands dot the main basin of the lake. Fishing for landlocked salmon and brook trout is a popular sport, and visitors can rent canoes or boats to explore the park's undeveloped shoreline. The day-use area is a short walk from the camping area where picnic tables and grills are available close to the beach. A lifeguard is on duty. The day-use area has swings, volleyball, basketball, and a sandpit where younger children play. Three to five miles of hiking trails are within walking distance from the campground.

We were journeying northward towards Acadia NP and required a place to rest for the night. The location was almost ideal, lacking water or electricity, but still more enjoyable than a Walmart parking lot! We contacted them in advance, and they provided a map at the small ranger station indicating available spots for late arrivals. They offer a clean bathroom facility, a waste disposal area, and a hose for drinking water. Many spots lack privacy, but some are located by the water or offer water views. We had reliable T Mobile service, although the traffic noise was quite noticeable. Upon visiting the playground area, we were appalled by the amount of litter left by day-trippers. This was not the norm for Maine, and we questioned if it was intentional, perhaps leaving containers for someone to collect and return for money?

Very nice campground and beautiful lake, clean, nice size sites, some good for solar, wifi available. Only down side is the highway noise. It's tolerable during the day but it's kind of busy at night too.

We stayed 3 nights in site 12, which was an open site on grass overlooking Lake St. George. This is a popular place for those that fish and own motorboats, as there is a mice boat launch right next door. The lake is a crystal clear, deep and picturesque body of water. We kayaked in the early morning when the water was still, and had close encounters with loons, which was special. The site was fairly level and large with plenty of room to set up our tiny 6 x 8 camper, our truck, a 10 x 10 canopy with room to spare. There are waterfront sites that are quite large but some were fairly unlevel. Sites 21, 22, 23 and 30 seemed particularly nice. The sites are close together, but roomy, and the sites away from the water are wooded. A huge plus is that it is a small campground with less than 40 sites so it never felt cramped. There is a main bathroom/shower facility. It is unique in that there are about 10 individual bathrooms with their own shower. They are cleaned daily and the water gets hot. Another thing we appreciated was a great dishwashing station on the side of the bathhouse. There is a day use area a short walk from the campground that has a small swimming area that kids enjoy, and many picnic tables set right on the lake. This is not a campground we would stay at for an extended period, as there is not much in the immediate vicinity, but it is within 15 minutes to the cool town of Belfast on the Penobscot Bay and within 45 minutes of the popular and touristy town of Camden which has a beautiful harbor and many shops and restaurants. One down side is the road noise. The campground is situated right on Route 3, a fairly busy state highway connecting Augusta and Belfast on the coast. It does get quiet at night, but it can detract from the experience. Overall, this is a quaint, well-maintained little state park great for a weekend on the water.
