Molas Lake Park & Campground

65560 US Hwy 550 N
81433, Silverton
Colorado, Estados Unidos

Molas Lake Park Campground was granted to the Town of Silverton in 1925 from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.  The 137-acre campground sits along the Million Dollar Highway (US 550) in the central San Juan Mountains; the most spectacular peaks in the Colorado Rockies.  The Campground is adjacent to the largest wilderness area in the state of Colorado, the Weminuche Wilderness.   Molas Lake Park Campground provides visitors with unforgettable scenery, a stocked 25-acre lake, National Forest access via the Colorado Trail, and dark, starry skies free from light-pollution. The campground and day-use amenities were completely renovated in 2008. There are more than 50 campsites serving tent-campers, small RV's and pop-ups, and a few sites over 1,500 square feet to serve even the largest RV's. The park has one water pump, several clean and new vault-style restrooms, and showers. The Campground no longer has a dump station, but there are dump stations available within the Town of Silverton, 10 minutes away, for a small fee.   Seasonal Campground office (970) 387-4022.

Stunning scenery from this spread-out camping area. Spent time here in a tent during July 2015. Breath-taking sight of the lake and hills right from our tent entrance and location. Clearly, there were no electricity or facilities.

This lake is gorgeous and worth the cost. My issue is that I predominantly stayed here to get a hot shower after a 6-day backpacking trip. The problem is the showers are pay showers (currently $5 for 4 minutes). I don't have an issue paying for a shower but when the campsite is $40/night you would think that includes a shower. These aren't powered sites and they don't have water hookups. You are paying for the scenery and honestly, there are tons of free boondocking sites nearby that are nearly as beautiful. The biggest issue is that the showers are token only and you can only get the tokens during office hours. After 6-days on the trail, my wife and I arrived half an hour after the office closed so we had to wait another day to get our overpriced showers. After 6-days we needed more than 4-minutes! Add $20 (for 2) to the nightly fee for this campsite and $60 is a bit outrageous for a parking spot even if it is gorgeous. Another oddity is that the toilets are all pit. That is okay but once again the campground doesn't stock the toilets instead the office issues you a roll of TP when you arrive. If you arrive after hours you had better have your own. Again this in my opinion is a ridiculous way to run a campground when you are charging $40/night.

6/28/22 - 7/11/22: There are a total of 8 sites here: 1 pull through that has 2 sites, several could accommodate my 34' fifth wheel, most are either for vans or tent camping. The elevation is about 10,300 ft. There is a restroom, otherwise disperse camping with no amenities. Free!

Beautiful spot. Small campground. Nice lake and some trails. Looks like most folks stay for a while. Restrooms and water available.

Stopped here for the night on the way to Silverton. Only one other camper so we made sure to keep our distance for privacy for both. Beautiful location with hiking options.

This is a very popular spot… We were lucky enough to get a spot between two big groups with our three vehicles. I camped out in a tent while my friends stayed in their vehicles. Our spot had a great view overlooking the lake. Toilets are provided in several spots throughout this campground. Several hiking and biking trails as well as fishing were available.

There are a couple sites for larger rigs but most will handle medium sized or smaller. Very picturesque area of the San Juan Mountains. Still close enough to the highway to hear it sadly

We camped at Molas Lake in August of 2020. Long story short, this is a great campsite. I usually don't pay for campgrounds but I really wanted to stay at this lake and honestly, it was worth it. You're paying for staying right on the lake, bathrooms and shower facilities, kayak and SUP rentals, and a really well maintained campground. I brought my old 2WD truck and pop up camper and we had no issues getting in. Probably the most memorable part of the trip was watching a bald eagle swoop across the lake and land in a tree right above my head. Amazing. Some cons that I noticed, but were not serious enough for me to detract a star. You are right off Highway 550 so you will hear truckers and big rigs going by, but I maybe noticed the noise twice while we were there so again not a big deal. Also, some of the campsites are fairly close to each other. All of our neighbors were friendly and respectful, but I could imagine that may be a detractor for some. There is a full campsite map on their website, so if this may be an issue for you, I would recommend booking a campsite on the far side of the lake. You might be slightly (stressing slightly here) further away from the lake, but those campsites are tucked into the tree line so you'll have more privacy. I have AT&T and did not have a cell phone reception.

This place has the most amazing postcard view of mountains and a mountain lake we have ever camped at. The hiking was great and the Colorado trail is nearby. Rented a kayak on the lake and saw lots of trout. The only downside is hwy 550 and some truck noise climbing the hill behind the campground. Showers and water available at campground store but no hookups. You could fit a

We just stayed at molas lake for 3 nights and absolutely loved every minute of it. It's only 6 miles from the beautiful town of Silverton, Co. Our campsite # 20A is very secluded and we felt as if we were not even in a campground at all. Most sites are for tent camping or very small RVs and travel trailers. We were able to navigate the tight road with our 20 ft travel trailer fine but wouldn't recommend anything larger. This campground does not have any electric or dump station. We did not have an issue with that considering it was mid 30s at night and 70 during the day. We ran all we needed with our propane and battery. There was no att service in most of the campground except a short walk to the top of the hill by our site gained us 4g with 1 bar which was enough to make a phone call or check voicemail. We paid $30 per night which was more than the normal rate of $20 due to the holiday weekend. We felt it was worth every penny considering most of the free camp grounds in the area were so crowded. For anyone that is traveling to see the San Juan mountains this is a must stay location! The 4 on Tour

This campground is well worth the 8 hour drive I made from Phoenix . The views are outstanding and beautiful. Make sure you bring everything you need as shopping is far except the town of Silverton and it is expensive roughly 3 to 4 times the original cost . Silverton has tons of places to rent ATV and is a cool little town. Campground does have showers I believe 5$ for a 4 minute shower. Paddle board and Kayak rentals are available as well.
