Base Camp at Golden Gate Canyon

661 Hwy 46
80422, Black Hawk
Colorado, Estados Unidos

We are Denver’s staycation destination! Our campground is privately owned and offers a mountain camping experience within an hour of the Denver metro area. Elevation 9,230. We have 8 tent sites, 19 RV sites and 13 camping cabins available. We are only 20 minutes from Golden and 10 minutes from the casinos of Central City and Black Hawk. Golden Gate Canyon State Park is three miles away. Spend the day hiking or fishing and come back to Base Camp at Golden Gate Canyon to enjoy the rest of your evening. Base Camp (formerly Dory Hill Campground) is under new ownership as of May 1, 2014. We are already making improvements. The store was remodeled within the first three weeks and the grocery services were expanded. The liquor store (Pickle Liquors) has been moved inside the main building. The laundry room has been remodeled and is open for business. We are actively working on bringing gas services back.

I didn't lodge at this place, however, I figured some might find it useful to be aware that the fee for disposing water is $35, while the price for each gallon of clean water is $0.25.

The location Is great: just minutes by car to nice hikes in the park and all you can eat buffets at the casinos in Blackhawk. Some sites have waste dumps and some do not. Verizon cell coverage is available at the store just a short walk away. Good place for that spring shakedown trip from Boulder or Denver.

Hosts were nice and views were good, but we left for an hour and came back with our chairs stolen. Not thrilled. Also is a free for all with showers. There is people that are not staying at the camp that can just pull in and park and take showers and use the restrooms. A lot of traffic that are not campers

Great small campground, has beautiful view plus all the amenities. Has a store, gas, laundry, park, showers, and clean bathrooms. The hosts/workers were extremely friendly. Only thing I would recommend is taking 119 and not the Golden Gate Canyon road if you are pulling a trailer. Our son got some elevation/motion sickness from all the up-downs and turns in Canyon Rd. Save time by taking 119 as far as you can!

We stayed in site #1 for 3 nights and enjoyed awesome scenery as well as peaceful nights. Our only negative was zero Verizon cell coverage. The wifi worked well for a campsite but it would go in & out occasionally. We we defintely stay here again.

Saturday evening around 600. Labor Day weekend. I’ve been driving since 4am. Should be waaaaaay past Denver. I’m not making my destination and begin calling every campground I can find like a complete nube. After getting laughed at by at least a half dozen camp hosts, Russ at Base Camp answers the phone. He checked around to see if some no-shows were really not showing and got a place for me to crash. There are some really good human beings running this place. Base Camp is clean, cozy, and in the perfect location of the Rocky Mts. It’s a curvy road to get there, but it’s worth it. Families are hanging out, children playing. Rocky Mt. fishing ponds close by as well as hiking. Stars galore at night. Gas pumps on site (for those who drive hours on end and forget to get gas beforehand). Very clean and updated showers with HOT water. Superbly stocked country store. And I can’t say enough nice things about the people running it.

We enjoyed our stay here. The property was immaculately clean and easy access to Golden Gate State Park.

Really no other place to camp in the area for winter so we were thankful they were open. Just stayed one night passing through. Restrooms were...in need of some love. Well stocked store on site.

Base Camp at Golden Gate Canyon has enjoyed a couple seasons of new ownership as of 2017. Sparkling clean and very safe-feeling, it's a great jumping-off point for Golden Gate Canyon State Park as well as attractions in Blackhawk, Idaho Springs, and Georgetown. We've stayed here three times, twice in cabins and once as a family group that combined one 24' TT and one cabin. After a friendly and efficient check-in that includes directions to your site, you're on your own unless you prefer to be social. By-the-night sites have a little tree cover between them but this is a compact campground. So, although the area generally is quiet, you can hear a little campground buzz from neighbors in the evening hours. (Cabins, fair warning, are very close together. Cooperative parking is required so that you're not putting a foot in your neighbor's fire ring.) Full-timer sites are close-packed without tree cover. No cell service (with any carrier as of 2017), but they do have campground wireless. Restrooms are dated very but clean. I believe they are scheduled for remodel soon. A fully-stocked convenience store onsite offers everything from baked beans to fishing tackle, plus a laundry room and liquor store. There's a modest playground and a rec center across the street for swimming. This is a non-marijuana campground. We've seen local law enforcement doing drive-throughs. I've felt very safe here with two small children.
