Skidaway Island State Park is about 25 minutes from downtown Savannah, GA. We traveled here so that our daughter could spend some time with her friend who attends the local art school, SCAD. We've seen this historic locale several times before but never from a camper's perspective. The first thing you notice when you drive into the park is the amazing canopy of live oaks draped in Spanish moss. Most of the roads are two-way. The majority of sites seem spacious and private. We stayed in camping area #3 at site #75 and loved it. The site was not level but with four blocks we were good to go. The bathrooms were old but clean. We rode our mountain bikes on the 3 mile Big Ferry Trail Loop that had several points of interest: Freshwater Slough, Shell Midden, Liquor Still, Earthworks, Saltwater Slough, and Alligator Ponds. The observation tower was closed because of storm damage that has not been repaired. If you didn't plan on staying at Skidaway, but still wanted to see Savannah, you could park your home-on-wheels in town. The visitor center has RV parking for $8 a day on a first come, first served basis. There are some great reviews for it at Campendium. Be careful to map out your trip when driving on Savannah's roads as there are many that are narrow and only one-way. Since we are participating in a GA State Park program called Tails on Trails, we decided to drive on over to Fort McAllister State Park so we could do their required hike. Oh, what I'll do for a t-shirt. The staff there was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, there was some kind of bug that was truly a pest. Or maybe WE were the pests since they were swarming to obviously procreate. As we hiked farther into the forest, closer to the marshes, these bugs became wicked and evil. No joke. They started biting and dive bombing our ears. That, and the sign that was posted for hikers to watch out for copperhead snakes, was all we needed to RUN back to the car. Been there, done that, and DONE with that. We drove over to the RV section of the park and saw that they were in the process of making a lot of improvements which at present made the park look more like a construction zone. In my opinion, Skidaway is 1,000 times better for RVing in the Savannah area. We took our dog, a Shih-Tzu/Lhasa-Apso mix, to eat in town with us. We found several dog-friendly places on a site called BringFido and settled on the Bayou Cafe. They brought a bowl of water out for Hero and made us all feel welcome. By the way, the fish and chips was outstanding. Our dog was also welcome and received water on Tybee Island at the North Beach Bar and Grill while our guests were swimming. Word to the wise, dogs are not allowed on the beach. I hear that there is a place called Little Tybee Island where they are allowed, though. Stay safe and enjoy the journey!
