Mahlon Dickerson Reservation

995 Weldon Road
07849, Lake Hopatcong
New Jersey, Verenigde Staten

Mahlon Dickerson Reservation, the largest park of the Morris County Park System, encompasses 3,200 acres of near wilderness and recreational areas, with over 20 miles of multi-use trails. One of the Reservation s outstanding features is Headley Overlook, one of the highest points in the Morris County Park System. Along the Pine Swamp trail, the highest point in Morris County, at 1395 feet, can also be found. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation has four activity areas, beginning with two options for overnight stays. The first is a camping area with tent sites and Adirondack shelters, complete with platforms, picnic tables and fire rings. In addition, the Mahlon Dickerson trailer area, with paved sites, features electric and seasonal water hook-ups, picnic tables and charcoal grills.

I made a trip to this location with a 35-foot 5th wheel and a long bed pickup, settling in at site #4. This east/west, BI site cost me $27 per night. Both the roads and the site were surfaced with asphalt. The roads were somewhat narrow, but the park management has attempted to alleviate this by introducing gravel in various spots along the sides and at some sites. A good number of the sites are inclined, with site #4 being one of the more even ones, although I still needed to use boards underneath the driver's side. A useful piece of advice would be to stay close to the passenger side of the asphalt to avoid a significant drop at the rear corner of the driver's side. The park supplied water via hoses running all over the place, so if you plan on visiting in early spring or late autumn, it's best to call ahead to confirm the availability of water hookups. Site #4 offers partial shade, while the rear loop is completely shaded. This site boasts an expansive "front yard" and is conveniently located near the bathhouse, which, despite its worn-out appearance, was clean. Due to the park's small size, there was minimal foot traffic to the bathhouse. The site came with a picnic table and grill, but there was no fire pit. As for connectivity, I had 3 bars of 5G with Verizon, no wifi, a download speed of 308.6 mbps, and only

We camped in November after the water at the sites was shut off, but we were able to fill our fresh water at the restrooms. Mostly level, asphalt parking spots. Weldon Rd is a smaller paved road with slight hills and curves. We had no problems getting here with our 34 ft fifth wheel.

Came here as a last minute change since we needed hook ups. Lovely small campground hidden in the woods. Sites were a bit unlevel side to side but Anderson levelers did the trick. Unfortunately, it rained the entire time we were there and the electric went out as well. But Park staff were very responsive and provided updates so we were only without power for a few hours.

This is a nice quiet wooded campground. We had an electric and sewer site. There was a dump station on site. This is a very small campground that we will definitely return to since my husband works close by. The bathhouse was older but clean.

This quiet county park is perfect for someone looking to checkout the New Jersey countryside. For the price, it was an amazing find. The roads are well maintained, it was easy to find, and even though every site was full, it was very quiet! Think about calling for reservations before arriving. We pulled in on a Monday and were very lucky to find an available site. The sites are mostly shaded and some of them look like they might be a problem leveling. All of them are back-in sites with water and electricity. The power was steady but the water hookups can be pretty far away and you might want to arrive with a 50' hose. There is a large area of grass to walk your dogs (on leash) and the additional services (bathhouse, dump station, garbage) are convenient to all sites. We got 3 bars of LTE on both our Verizon and AT&T lines. We'd stay here again.

This is a county park (Morris County, NJ) but it's more impressive than most state parks I've been to, as well as some national parks. Certainly at least the NJ park system should take notes from this park. The price is right. The place is dog friendly. No extra cost for pets. It's clean. Honestly, I have never been to an RV park with fewer pieces of trash. Virtually none. The bathrooms had great hot water and pressure, individual lockable shower rooms. Spaces were roomy and only slightly unlevel (some worse than others) and they were well spaced apart from one another. The water spigots were far from the RVs, but in the front, they provided long hoses. We also stayed in the back for a few nights, and there we had to use our own 50 ft hose. There were miles and miles of incredible hiking and biking trails, with trailheads right at the RV area--trails with scenic overlooks and well marked blazes, picnic areas, sign posts, swamps, ponds, boulders, and streams. It's incredibly beautiful. We had good cell service with metropcs (t mobile towers) and could even have full blown phone conversations in the deep woods. The park is just over an hour from NYC. Since we started RVing full time in December, this is hands down our favorite campground, and we'll definitely be back.

My husband had a job in Newark and it was incredibly difficult to find a campground close by within out budget. However, I stumbled upon this campground. The website was a tad tricky to navigate but was definitely worth the extra effort. It was roughly a 1 hour drive to Newark as well as Newark-Penn Station where we took the PATH train into NYC which I would highly suggest. This campground is very inviting and private. We stayed in both 12 & 13, but site 13 was definitely our favorite. Both sites were mostly shaded and had space between each site for some privacy. This campground also had a recycling can which is a huge bonus in my opinion. We are full time rvers and are always happy to see recycling in the campgrounds. There are also plenty of great hiking trails within the campground which were great for our dog to exercise. The camp host was also very friendly. We would definitely come back to this area to stay again.

This was one of those adventures that turned out great. The site was secluded yet had water and electric but no sewer and was far enough from the the next site that you got a good camping experience. Leveling blocks were needed on the paved pad, maybe an inch or two side to side. The campground was clean. Our site was a little buggy but that's what the great outdoors is all about. Ask for a even numbered site, the water hookup will be on the correct side. Bathrooms were clean so not having a sewer connection was no big deal. Park had great hiking trails and we noticed some mountain biking trails too. Would camp here again. P.S. make reservations early, they have a limited number of sites.

This was a wonderful place to camp! Each campsite was spaced out so it felt private. There was electric and water hookups. When we were there they had extension hoses provided to reach your camper. One of the highlights for us was all the wildlife we saw. There was a deer and beaver near the campground and we saw a bear at a distance. (our cell service was also a highlight!)

The previous reviews are spot on, so be sure to read them all. I’ll just note that the price we paid included $15 for a site, $5 nonresident fee and $7 reservation fee. The ranger on duty was extremely friendly and helpful. This must be one of the best camping values in New Jersey.

Mahlon Dickerson Reservation is a Morris County Park. The county has set up 18 RV sites in the park with electric and water hookups. The clean bathrooms and showers help to save water so you don't have to dump your tanks until you are ready to leave. While there are no other amenities at the park, the location makes it a great place to stay. Within an hour's drive of the park, you have mountain hiking trails, historic locations like Morristown and lakes for water sports. Since I have family roots in the area, I also had access to historic archives and libraries. A few of the sites are sloped, so bring leveling blocks. The county reservation app is a great tool and I suggest referring to their site descriptions for the length and width of each site as they vary greatly.

This is a lovely county park with water and electric hookups, lots of trees and shade, about 5 degrees cooler than cities to east. Water is located between sites a considerable distance away but one 50’ hose is provided. You’ll need to hook your own hose to the site hose at lower numbered sites. $22 rate is for out of state camping, they also offer a discounted weekly rate, but 14 day limit is not flexible. 16 days between stays. Clean, showers and flush toilets, lots of hiking trails nearby. Very popular, you’ll need a reservation for weekends. Not all sites are very level, 18 seemed to be the least level. Website has length and width of asphalt pad. Grill is sometimes located far from site, not sure why.

We stayed at site 15 for 5 days. The sites are nicely wooded, very well spaced, fairly level with 50A service and water hookup. Although the water spigots were shared between sites, they provide hose caddies that should reach most RV hookups. No sewer hookup, but there is a convenient dump station. There are no fire rings in the RV section, only raised grills. We had the place pretty much to ourselves during the week, but the weekend did get busy. AT&T had ok data connection with 1-2 bars most of the time. There is no satellite coverage due to the heavy tree canopy. OTA TV was very inconsistent using an external omni antenna. There is no WiFi. There is a very nice network of trails in the reservation, most if not all were leashed dog friendly. There is a very nice restaurant, Stone Water, less than 10 miles away and is right on lake Hopatcong.

They offer military discount, so instead of $22 it was $17 a night. We loved this campground! Water and electric are included. The dump station is fairly easy to get to when you leave. Sites are large and private. There was a black bear causing a stir while we were there, but he didn’t bother anything but the dumpster. We definitely would stay here again!

this was a pleasant surprise of a campsite. We stayed over a Saturday night and it was very quiet. There were several sites available. The road around the campground is paved as are the individual sites (see pics), relatively level, and have electric (50 amp, 30 amp, 110v) and water at each site. New picnic tables and BBQ grills are also provided. Activities focus around hiking, but there is a baseball field and a mowed grass field for any activity. There is also a dump station on site (available to non campers for$20). Great campground, highly recommend.
