Aroostook State Park

87 State Park Rd
04769, Presque Isle
Maine, Verenigde Staten

In 1938, interested citizens of Presque Isle donated 100 acres of land to the State with the hope of creating Maine's first state park. This hope became reality is 1939, with the creation of Aroostook State Park. Subsequent donations increased the park to its present size of over 600 acres. Encompassing Quaggy Jo Mountain and Echo Lake, the park provides year-round recreational activities. Rising abruptly from the surrounding farmlands, the most prominent feature of Aroostook State Park is Quaggy Jo Mountain. Uplifted by folding of the earth's crust, weathered and shaped by glaciation through time, Quaggy Jo offers a unique chance to study our geologic past. The underlying limestone formations mark the presence of an ancient sea, and the mountain's outer layer of volcanic rock suggests a later lava flow of an unknown origin. Quaggy Jo is the shortened form of its Indian name "QuaQuaJo". A popular translation for QuaQuaJo is "twin peaked". The park's natural areas are typical of northern Maine. Its forest consists mainly of a mixture of spruce, fir, beech, and maple along with younger stands of poplar, birch, and other hardwoods. In the park's low swampy areas, dense stands of cedar can be found. A wide variety of birds and mammals live within the park. While squirrels and chipmunks are most frequently seen, fox, deer, moose and bear also rail the park "home". Birds of all types are found here, too, including hawks, owls and woodpeckers.

Really enjoyed the South Mtn to North Mtn hike. A bit strenuous, but 2.3 miles from camp site takes about 90 min. Kayaked lake, a bit small, only 2.5 miles to do perimeter but easy boat launch. You get a nice view of the Twin Peaks from the lake. The central shower/bathrooms were excellent. Did get a pic of a bear on my critter cam on one of the nearby trails. However, there is no dump site at the campground and using the nearby commercial RV park would be $25 to dump, which is quite a negative in my mind.

We stayed here 8-1 to 8-8. Small campground on a hill. Steep drive in, sites are large and for the most part well spaced apart. Bathrooms spotless and they have a covered kitchen area with dishwashing station. Several pit toilets which are also spotless. Great hikes up to North and South peaks, strenuous. Nice grassy beach and boat launch, firewood is good and dry. Quiet.

Maine's first state park and the first state park we stayed in while in Maine. First night was so nice we moved to #25 to stay a 3rd. Ranger at the booth was very helpful and informative. At this point we haven't met the camp hosts at site 1. Sites 25 and 26 have good solar exposure in mid July. Sites are firm packed gravel. As we parked on the site we added 4" however one could find a level contour line as the site is that wide. Sites are well spaced out. View is into the wooded hillside and behind site 29. Uphill one looks toward #25 across 50' of sparce understory growth beneath maturing mixed forest species. We enjoyed identifying the birds, some we needed the guide books for 👍

Nicely maintained, lots of large families with children when we were there (the lake is a draw). There are 5 electric sites, 3 of which are first come first serve. We were able to move to one of them for our second night. Of course because it is wooded there are lots of bugs!

I had originally booked us on site 4, but felt it was to shaded and smaller than I expected. Asked if I could look at other sites and the Ranger was very accommodating. She said as long as the new site did not have a red flag (reserved) I could move to the new site. I chose site 17, it had sun for our solar panels and it would fit our out 30 ft RV quite nicely. We were across from the shower/flush toilet building and the kitchen shelter. The campground has 30 sites and throughout the campground are vault toilets. I would recommend sites 3, 25, 26, and of course 17. There are several hiking trails and a small lake to kayak.
