Camden Hills State Park

280 Belfast Rd
04843, Camden
Maine, Stati Uniti d'America

Camden Hills State Park signature location is the scenic vista high atop Mt. Battie where sweeping views of Camden, Penobscot Bay, and surrounding islands await. On a clear day, visitors can see Cadillac Mountain at Acadia National Park. Mt. Megunticook, the highest of the Camden Hills - and highest peak on the mainland - is a moderate climb by foot trail. The park is located a few minutes north of Camden, a quintessential New England town featuring shops that are within walking distance to the working harbor. Harbor cruises, whale and puffin watches are available daily. Summer nights spent under the stars is a recipe for family fun. Campers who stay at the park's campground enjoy the comfort stations that are equipped with hot showers. A popular fall activity for hundreds of visiting leaf peepers is to drive up the Mt. Battie Auto Road and view the surrounding hillside of fall foliage color.

I stayed at this location last year and returned this year while on my way to my seasonal job in Bar Harbor. On both occasions, I lodged in the lower loop section. Due to the time of the year, the entire campground wasn't operational. This state park, which is quite old, is filled with numerous trees providing ample shade. Although the sites are spacious and well-distanced, some can be challenging to navigate, particularly with larger vehicles. I have a 22-foot trailer, and there were a few spots I wouldn't have dared to try to maneuver into due to the narrow roads and potential obstacles when reversing. Luckily, I had the opportunity to drive around the loop and choose a spot. According to the park ranger, this option becomes available as the season progresses. There are a few spots that can handle larger vehicles and a couple of drive-through sites. Considering it's on the east coast, the rates for water and electricity were fair. The dump station is easily accessible. The entrance and exit are a bit narrow but manageable.

In the waning days of September 2022, we lodged at this place for a trio of nights. The sites were nestled in a decent woodland setting, but the $49 fee for water and electricity seemed steep. We got there without a reservation, and the park officer handed me a map showing the spots with water and electricity that were still open (it was a bit cold and the trees obstructed our solar power). We quickly selected spot #29 and I returned to settle the payment. Spot #29 was extensive and flat. There was a multitude of appealing spots! It was a great location for leisurely strolls and served as a good launching point for exploring the surroundings. We rated it 4 stars, the cost being the drawback. However, we didn't come across many campgrounds in Maine, and the ones we did find were either privately owned or costly.

We were lucky to nab a drive up (non-reservable) site on Aug 27, 2022. We got site 15. It is nice sized for our 23 foot trailer. We did not find it to be level, as you will see in the pictures, but with adjustments, we were able to get level only with our truck unhooked. A larger rig might not work in this site. It has dappled shade, so is nice and cool. Privacy is OK, and it has been quiet. Cell signal is weak but works a bit (t-mobile), and WiFi is third party for a fee. It was recommended we see how strong the signal is before paying. We have not used the showers or restrooms.

We have camped here many times in the past, and we always leave pleased. Sites are good, hookups in good shape. Bathhouses/showers in Maine state parks are well designed and clean, with individual unisex shower rooms so no waiting - although some mechanical issues were noted. Very quiet even over Labor Day weekend - lots of families out playing hard during the day and resting hard at night! We will undoubtedly return when we travel coastal Maine.

Easy check-in, site 6 was level and had good separation from neighbors. Had a flock of turkeys with chicks come through our site. Oceanview Overloop trail has spectacular views of Camden. Easy drive to Mt. Battie overlook from the campground. Short drive to historic Camden, Maine. Exit from dump station takes you 1/2 mile through the campground, I backed out to avoid this. 2 bars of AT&T coverage and no HDTV channels.

We made this reservation just for it's location near our grand niece 3.5 and nephew 5. It was their first time camping and they came out to stay one night with us. It has been a rainy summer and everything was damp but we had a great day and we were able to take advantage of the trails that leave right from the campground! There were some easy enough for our little hikers and we all had a great time. Nearby Camden has a great ice cream shop as a reward! The campground itself offers a variety of sites. Some with water and electric and some without. We chose to have hookups and our site was level and nested with other campers. The sites without hookups up on the hill were really spacious and felt a bit more "remote". All in all we were left with a good old fashion campground feel! My husband adds: There were a fair amount of people but not overcrowded. It was also quiet and the Rangers friendly and helpful! He also visited the restrooms and says they were clean and adequate. We also purchased wifi and it was GREAT!

We live near this State Park, but being new to Maine had not stayed there. Sadly we visited end of June 2021 during horrible hot, muggy weather so didn’t fully enjoy the region. The Field parking for trailers is very clean and would be my choice for Fall. We were shaded, in lightly swaying trees. As others mentioned, the spots are spaced well. There is a small playground up by the third level however there were few kids present during our visit. Park was quiet. We had electricity and water hook-ups; there is a septic dump site. Also sells ice and firewood. Camden is a short drive where there are lovely shops and places to eat or grab a kayak lesson. The shoreline trail on the picnic side of the Park is lovely. And, everyone hikes or drives the short trip to Mount Battie for its view. It was hazy when we went. Bathrooms needed attention but were okay. I skipped their showers based upon conditions in restroom.

It is a state park, not an RV park so our expectations were tempered to that. It is nice and charming. The sites are spread out and most have tree cover. There seems to be three ares, front which is just a field, middle and back are pretty spread out. The middle is for the bigger rigs. They have wifi available at the camp for free. Pretty good speed but it is shared by everyone so can be congested. They try to solve this by giving everyone two slips of paper with a connection code that works exactly once for 1 device. While you are there that device will connect only. The only problem is I could not get my VPN to connect over their wifi. (Security reasons I suppose). I got spotty ATT coverage (5 down,

We reserved a site back in February for a late June 2-night stay. We arrived to check in and were told the site we booked had been changed. No one knew why and they proceeded to put us in the grassy field area when we booked a wooded site. Staff was very unhelpful at trying to get us a new site so we left and stayed elsewhere after all. Would NOT recommend this state park. Beautiful Camden location but lousy service.

This is a good location to exploring the Camden, Rockland area and all that coastal Maine has to offer. The campground is easily accessed right off HWY1 and there's a lot of hiking trails and scenic points throughout the park. The grounds are kept clean and the power / water was solid with no issues. We struggled here with 2 things. 1 was connectivity. Working from home requires me to have solid internet service. Even with a booster, ATT and Verizon were incredibly slow to the point of not being able to rely on for Skype conference calls etc (1mbU/1mbD). Without a booster, I had no ATT service and Verizon was barely 1 bar.The campground offers free wifi and when that wasn't bogged down with other users, it was fast. But during peak times in the morning or any time after early afternoon, everyone else got online and the wifi would at times be unusable. So for this reason, I would not camp here again. If you don't rely on solid internet service then you don't care about that. The 2nd issue we had was the sites are very un level. We stayed in the open field area where the sites are more big rig friendly and they were still quite un level. You need blocks here for sure even in those sites. The inner sites also looked to be very un level. OTA channels were also really bad with only 4 PBS stations coming in and out on occasion. The bathrooms are very clean and showers were strong and hot. Since this park doesn't have sewer, having plenty of good showers was a good perk. I never had to wait as there were plenty of showers for everyone. They are individual rooms (not in a shared bathroom) so I also appreciated that. The area cannot be beat for shopping and dining and just overall sheer beauty. The staff was also very friendly. The Clean Bee Laundromat right up the street was a good choice. Very clean and affordable prices.

The campground really isn't the draw here. Yes, it's way overpriced, but you'll find that all over New England - other sites in the area will set you back $70-80 a night and are much tighter. Sites are fine - they need some leveling, and some are better than others. The real draw here is the location though. You're within walking access to a good 40 miles of trail, some that end in incredible ocean views, you're right across the street from the ocean where you can picnic on a hill, sit on a bench or stroll the short trail, and you're about 10 minutes from downtown Camden, which is a great little harbor town with lots of amenities. It pained us a little to cough up this much for electric and water, but New England RV camping overall just comes with a little higher of a price tag. We'll make it up boondocking out west in the winter! A note on sites - we stayed in 107, which on the surface seems like a crappy site (very close to the entrance), but we wound up liking it because there were only 3 sites in the loop, which meant we had the whole cul-de-sac to ourselves for a good chunk of our stay and no one else walked or biked through it since there was no reason to unless you were staying there.

Rate includes out of state and online registration fee. That added $10 per day to the site cost. Our site had NO hook-ups. This is a beautiful area and the park had a lot of hiking and great views. Most sites seem to be un-level. We had to move to a different site (1) for the last night and it was 10" front to back out of level. Sites include options of : grass field, mostly to partly shaded or in the trees with full shade. The roads in the park at one time were paved but now crumbling from disrepair. Some of the sites back right up to the trash dumpsters, huge pile of sand and rock or the dump. Be very careful in site selection. Really like this area but at $45 a night, I feel that it was overpriced.
