A travelers rest stop dating from the 1850s, now seeing occasional use from mushroom hunters.
The Sunny Corner Camping Reserve is a large flat area well suited to any kind of camping, with a concrete shelter, fire-rings, and lots and lots of mushrooms. Being a bit out of the way, and 'hidden' between the facilities of Bathurst and Lithgow, the grounds are usually very peaceful-- Sunny Corner is a favourite 'secret' spot for this reviewer. Be certain to know your mushrooms before foraging for any. While there's edible Slippery Jacks and Saffron Milk Caps in abundance, however there's other species of white-but-not-field-mushrooms that are highly toxic, and unless you have Mad Viking Skills, you don't want to bother with the psychotropic Fly Agarics. The Oberon Visitors Centre has a dedicated information centre about mushroom-hunting-- contact them on 02 6329 8210, and their relevant website is at The existing toilets (as of March 2013) are very... extremely... rustic. The local Community Progress Association has been given a budget for their replacement, however. A small dam is at the north of the campground where small numbers of yabbies can be caught. In general, the water that flows around the campground is considered safe to drink, as there's little livestock around, and the drums of arsenic and other poisons left behind by gold prospectors were more towards the Portland area. If you need some more space away from existing campers, near to the toilet there is a track leading east about 100 metres into a clearing suitable for tents. Yes... the poor neglected children's playground and tennis court, installed in the early 1990s, was a bit of a mis-step by the community benefactors.
Access
This site is accessable by caravans in good weather.
Getting there
From the Great Western Highway, take the Sunny Corner/Portland turnoff, and continue 8 kilometres further on. The camping reserve will be on the right-hand side before the several residences, just before a culvert. If you see the Community Hall, you've gone too far.
