This location serves as a stunning "sanctuary" amidst an otherwise monotonous journey. There's ample space on the road, particularly if you arrive early and manage to park alongside the barrier. If you're interested in off-grid camping, you can traverse the livestock grid, but ensure to inspect the road status beforehand as there might be some challenging sections. Unexpectedly, there was a snowfall around Memorial Day, which was surprising yet breathtaking. Check out the pictures.

Just a pair of large trucks were present. We positioned our RV next to the freeway, offering a stunning panorama of fields and highlands. The area bordered government-owned territory. We planned a stroll post supper. Our parking spot was approximately 15 feet away from our restroom, ensuring ample space for the trucks.

I departed late from Boise heading towards California. I estimated my arrival at Winnemucca to be around 9:00pm, so after reading some reviews, I chose to halt here. An added advantage was that it didn't cost me anything. I had anticipated having to clean up but it seems the previous visitors were respectful of the area as it was neat when I got there and remained so when I left. We're using Boost Mobile (under a T-Mobile plan) with our MOFI-5500 cellular router. Surprisingly, the data speeds were impressive in this remote location, with 82mbps download and 15.2mbps upload!

Previous reviews have been mostly Nov-Apr off-season. As we are here in July, I can report that the dirt road beyond the cattle gate is rutted, but firm. There are plenty of suitably level places to pull off and set up camp. Just look for tire tracks in the well grazed grassland. We used 4WD on our truck camper, but it wasn’t really necessary. We are here all alone tonight except for a herd of cattle 1/4 mile away, and an abundance of grasshoppers. Road noise is minimal. This is a really nice option for a self-contained overnight stay when you’re headed this way. You can walk near the dirt road in sandals, but if you get much away from it you’ll probably want boots. AT&T coverage is a solid four bars, but it’s 3G, which is not one of the options in the menu.

We spent a night here in mid November 2021 and were somewhat apprehensive when we saw the ruts and water in the road after the cattle guard. But we motored ahead ( in 4 wheel low) with no problems and found a reasonably level area upt the road about 1/2 mile. I would be more nervous in wet weather if it ever occurs there.

Traveling solo with a minnie winnie, i was little hesitant about getting theough and over the cattle gate but scouted it out and ther are a few big flat spots just 20-30 feet afterwards. Dirt road was definitely beat up but just pulled off quickly upon entering to the first level clearing. Rest stop filled up with lits of truckers and generators running while i was alone in the field. Also saw some tow campers parked off the tarmac but still inside the rest area. Great spot if you need a break, mountain range views are spectacular with moonrise and sunrise happening. If you have a 4x4 or lifted sprinter, definitely head in further, very private and secluded closer to the mountains you go

Same as the other reviews... cross the cattle gate at the rest area and there’s an open range that allows for dispersed camping. Had one other camper in the area that stayed for a night, but that’s the only company we got. It’s exposed, so we were hit by snow and wind, but the view of the mountains were spectacular. Will have to come back to hike here when there’s not a blizzard. Absolutely no problem with Verizon/ATT, strong signal with both!

We stayed here for a place to sleep on our way from Oregon to Utah. Like the other reviews say, go through the cattle guard and you can pretty much park anywhere in this open space. The sunset and stars were amazing. We were also pleasantly surprised to have cell service. There was one other camper who went farther back. The road was pretty bumpy but we did fine with our 40 ft rig.

Dispersed camping doesn't get much more dispersed than this! Just drive over the cattle guard and head toward the mountains until you find the 60 acres of open space you want to make your campsite. I was dreading this stop but it turned out magnificent. Unbelievable view toward the mountain - jaw dropping evening sun on the desert hillsides. The road is not a problem for anything other than maybe some big rigs. Even there, a lady drove in later in the afternoon with a full horse trailer, no problem. It is smooth dirt, with some significant dips, but no rocks or chance of getting stuck. You can camp in the rest area if you want, but frankly that looked miserable, ugly and noisy. Get 1/4 mile out and you wont hear (much) the highway. One warning - there is a LOT of very fine dust, so make sure you set up camp on the up-wind side and you will be fine. And you will carry a fine layer of reminder of this interesting place with you inside your rig for the rest of the year!

We didn't go through the gate onto the BLM land because we were only staying for the night and 2 other campers were already at the rest stop for the same reason. The view was great and it was extremely easy access for our one night stay. If we were going to be more than one night we probably would have ventured through the gate but the road looked rough. The highway noise was not too bad considering we were right next to it.

There is a dirt road just off the rest stop area. Go thru the gate in the fence on the north side of the parking lot, across a cattle guard. There is a bit of a dip on the other side of the cattle guard so you may want to check it out first. You can drive in about a mile and then there is another fence. That first mile is flat, hard packed dirt with a few bumps and rocks but we managed fine in our Ford Transit van. The road looked a little rougher on the other side of that second fence so we didn't go any further. There are sparse clumps of grass along the side of the road. There are no obvious established spots per se (no fire rings) but you can see where people have driven onto the grass so we picked a spot that was already trampled down. There are pit toilets at the rest stop. You could just stay at the rest stop but it was nice and quiet being off the highway and away from the trucks at the rest stop.

We stayed here for 4 nights in the July heat which was a bit bothersome at times, but this is Nevada, and 95 degrees is cool compared to some places. Entrance to the BLM land is in the NE corner of the Rest Area and can be a little hard to spot if you dont know where to look. There is a raised cattleguard at the entrance and the road is a bit washed out around it, so make sure you have the clearance to get back here. The road in is a mix of loose sand and dirt, and hard packed dirt with some minor ruts along the way. This is BLM, so camp where you please, but we noticed by the flattened grass that most chose a site off to the left side of the road. There are about 6 areas/sites where people clearly have camped in between the rest area and the 2nd fence/cattleguard that is approx 1 mile in. Enter the hillside after the 2nd cattleguard at your own risk. 4x4 and high clearance are recommended if you decide to go in further. The area was very clean from what I noticed, less a few glass beer bottles which we packed out with us. Please pack it out, folks! We camped about 3/4ths of a mile in and the highway noise wasn't too bad but we usually don't mind that stuff too much. Watch out for cow-pies as this Public Land is used for grazing by some local ranchers in the area. Only other thing I would beware of is Rattle Snakes. I never saw one, but did have one shake its rattler at me when I hiked up the road closer to the base of the mountains, and since I couldn't see it, I turned around. Just me though. As for the location, it is BEAUTIFUL. 360 degree views of mountains and elevation. The sunsets are incredible, and the stargazing is other-worldly. We stayed during a time where 2 meteor showers coincided and it was absolutely breathtaking. Would most definitely stay here again.

Hard to find entrance. Entrance is inside the rest area. Nice hard packed Road. Quiet if you go up the road. Loud if you stay close to the rest stop

Absolutely beautiful views of snow capped mountains. Easy to get to and any size rig will fit. No ATT. Verizon was ok but not great. The road in could be impassable in heavy rain.
