Located in the heart of Europe, Austria is a country of incomparable charm and beauty. It is known for its rich history, breathtaking landscapes and cultural diversity. Austria is home to some of the world's most impressive architectural wonders, including the Schönbrunn Palace and St Stephen's Cathedral. The country is also famous for its musical heritage, as the birthplace of world-famous composers such as Mozart and Strauss. Moreover, Austria offers a range of outdoor activities, such as skiing in the Alps, hiking through the beautiful countryside or cycling along the Danube. With its delicious cuisine, friendly people and abundance of attractions, Austria is a must-visit destination for any traveller.

The climate in Austria

Austria has three different climates. The highest areas (in, for example, Tyrol and Vorarlberg) have a high mountain climate (type EH) and the lower parts have a temperate continental climate (type Dfb). The transition areas between these two climate zones have a cold continental climate, with cold winters and fairly cool summers. In the far west of Austria, there are some areas with a microclimate, with the temperate maritime climate (Cfb climate) being the most common. The fact that Austria largely has a continental climate and is virtually unaffected by the sea is reflected in the stark nature of the weather. The weather can change completely within one or a few days and also within the country there can be quite large differences in weather type and temperature at the same time. The Alpine regions are particularly susceptible to this and there can even be great differences per mountain or side of a mountain. A well-known weather phenomenon that can cause a sudden change in the weather is the föhn. This warm wind can cause a rapid rise in temperature and is often accompanied by dry, clear air.
