Big Billy Campground

Big Desert , Victoria

Remote campground in Big Dessert Wilderness Park with drop toilets, picnic tables and fire pits. The campground is mostly sand/dirt and has a little shade from the small trees throughout. It is surrounded by low mallee scrub, and has a great bush feel to it.

Thomastown Campground

Very pleasant,attractive, quiet bush camping in a small alpine valley on Shaws Creek. Sites well dispersed either side of the bridge. Adequate shade from Snow Gums over thick, short grass and wildflowers. Rated 4. 3/5 We keep returning to this camp.

A beautiful, peaceful sub-alpine camp overlooking a small, marshy snow plain (spring wildflowers), backed by forested ridge tops. Set in a forest reserve at 1,080m. Rated 4. 3/5. Magpies, rosellas, wombats and wallabies are common.

A reasonably large, level cleared circuit, surrounded by Peppermint forest with tea-tree understory above the rushing Taponga River. Short grass, well shaded. A pleasant camp, not as popular as other Lower Big River sites, probably as it is not on the Big River. Rated 4.

Cottontree Campground

A pleasant picnic/camping area in a small valley on the edge of the Mount Granya State Park. Features a level, gravelled car park and large level mown lawn (an old dairy site). There is very little shade, although backed by open, dry sclerophyll Red Stringybark and Long-leaved Box forest.

A pleasant, small camping area on the nose of a ridge above the picnic area and willow lined Victoria River (small). Set in open woodland of stunted gums over green mown grass and surrounded by rolling open farmland. Facilities (5 BBQs & tables, pit toilet) good.

Pleasant, quiet, dispersed bush camping by the Murray River adjacent to flood plain River Red Gum open grassed forest and billabongs. Sites are generally level, most with adequate shade and short green grass. Low level banks, no beach. Small, muddy, informal boat ramp. Rated 4.

Tranquil, lakeside camping shaded by scattered River Red Gums and some Black Box. 29 sites dispersed around the lake edge (tables & BBQs, 3 WCs), backed by red sand hills to the west, with Cypress-pine and Buloke. Kangaroos are very common.

Attractive green, semi-dispersed sites under Manna Gum and Mountain Grey Gum over short grass and surrounded by forest, near the bubbling Fyans Creek. Most sites best suit tent camping. Most sites slope. Grassed playing field adjoins. Popular, being close to Halls Gap, and a bit worn. Rated 3.

One of the most attractive, green picnic and camping areas in the district. Was in the middle of the Cobboboonee State Forest, now the Cobboboonee National Park Shaded by Messmate Stringybark (E. obliqua) and surrounded by a dense understory of musk.
