Did the Trail to the top of Thomas Mountain and all the spots at the top were taken so heading down to find an excellent spot that was nice and level and secluded. Just the peace and quiet I was looking for! Beautiful views surround of the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountain ranges. The road in is fairly tough for a 2WD low clearance vehicle I would suggest at least a High Clearance vehicle as the road is very rutted after the recent storm that came through. Cell signal on Verizon is good if you move around a bit you’ll get a good upload speed as well. Definitely coming back here again!

Long, rough road in to the sites. It was very rocky and rutted in some areas. A slow, steady pace saw us through though in a Chevy box truck. The site we slept at had a pit toilet, picnic tables and fire rings. Only one level spot in this area but a very worn and rutted driveway to it. This site also was the only one with a decent view. Gnats are a nuisance but at least they don’t bite.

Wow! We stayed at this campsite earlier this week in January on a Thursday night between Joshua Tree & San Diego (about 2 hours to each). We are doing the #vanlife thing driving a Ford E350 extended club van with a Kawasaki motorcycle hitched on the rear. It was a slow, torturous drive up the mountain on a rough road at night with some mud that turned to snow near the summit. With careful driving we are thankful we did not get stuck! However, the site was worth it! While we did pass two dirt bikers on their way down the mountain, we had the site to ourselves. Super quiet & peaceful with the stars above & swaying pine trees. Just beautiful! There are primitive restrooms, trash cans, picnic tables & firerings at several sites. Would definitely visit again, make sure you have everything you need for the night & in case of a vehicle issue.

Driving northbound on Hwy 74 take 6S13 forest rd on left. The road is more suited to higher clearance vehicles.Suv, truck etc shluld make it. 4X4 not needed but a car wont make it due to rough road. The road goes thru the Tool Box Springs yellow post sites. They are nice, well marked and have fire pits, tables and vault toilets. Some have great views of the distant mountains. The road continues northbound and winds its way to Thomas Mtn yellow post sites. They ultimately returns to Hwy 74 in a big loop.
