The Hatchery

Amatikulu Lagoon
3800, Ongoye
KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

The Hatchery is a highly recommended property for self catering in Mtunzini for tourists visiting the Zululand region.

About The Hatchery
The Hatchery is a rustic beach and lagoon experience, situated about 15 minutes drive from Mtunzini and set against a backdrop of a beautiful river and overlooking a nature reserve, island and deserted beach. The Hatchery was originally a prawn breeding facility and it now makes for a unique destination experience for visitors to the North Coast. The facility has been ‘lightly’ renovated - the end result is a unique blend of comfort and rustic cool. The Hatchery is all about chilling out, letting loose and reconnecting. The rustic accommodation comprises a selection of rooms and a rooftop tent suited to accommodate up to 49 guests. We offer self catering accommodation and bringing your own supplies in is recommended. The rooms are equipped with linen, bedding, towels and air-conditioning. The en-suite bathrooms have double showers (no baths). Please see the individual unit descriptions and photos below or at Rooms & Rates. The communal kitchen and dining table is fully equipped and kitted for self catering. Other facilities include a swimming pool, braai area, conference facilities and secure parking. Guests are welcome to making use of the communal kitchen and dining table to suit their self-catering needs. Activities on-site include fly-fishing, fishing, bird watching and mountain biking. • Relax on the lagoon beaches • Hire a prawn feeder, get the rod out and catch dinner • Walk along the lagoon’s beaches or wade across the lagoon to Casuarina Island • The Amatikulu Nature reserve is not far away – suitable for a four by four drive vehicles

IT WAS MAGIC! The hatchery is the perfect place for someone like me, who enjoys nature! I stayed in the pump house. 2 steps from my door and I could drop into the round pool that you see on the pics. One step and your feet are in sea sand. So if you don't like sea sand, this place is not for you. The view from this unit is magnificent. When it rained in the afternoon, I lay on the bed with my book with this awesome view and was happy as pie to be reading while feeling like I'm in the jungle. Christopher (the "Gilly") helped me with a fishing rod and I even caught my own fish. There are 2 communal kitchens and enough pools from which you can choose to cool down. The units are all very close to one another, yet you still have privacy. Very child friendly for between 4/5 and over. The "paddle ski's" are free and you can row across the lagoon, walk over the dune and see miles of untouched ocean. I loved it an will return!
