A free council-provided campground/caravan park that is extremely popular with the Grey Nomads, not in the least because of the free hot showers.
Maybe a bit too popular, as there are rarely fewer than 20 RVs staying, several of them "permanent", and with those numbers the likelihood of inconsiderate behavior (generators, unleashed dogs, etc.) increases. The Gum Bend Lake is artificial-- it was a bicentennial project to provide a recreational reserve for the residents of Condobolin. From 2005 to 2010 the lake was dry due to a drought, but since then the council has budgeted to purchase water to refill the lake and gain the financial benefits of being a popular "RV-friendly town". Being a near-permanent body of water, the lake has a lot of birdlife. There are signs prohibiting walking Fido along the lakeside, lest they disturb the wildlife; however this is poorly patrolled. The campground is prone to flooding and strong winds. There is a 5km cycleway into the town of Condobolin, that provides a lot of useful facilities: supermarkets, a library with Internet, mechanical services, and such. For anyone interested in fishing, the local myth is there's Murray Cod in the nearby Lauchan River... (I mentioned the hot showers? It has the BEST free hot showers in all of NSW, no kidding. There's a 'proper' electric system, none of that on-demand gas-heated junk...)
