One of my favorite campgrounds on Mount Desert Island, this is the closest campground to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park and a stop on the free "Island Explorer" bus service. While there are two National Park campgrounds on the island that offer many wooded and private sites, those campgrounds are dry. Bar Harbor campground offers hookups and wooded, private sites. If you want privacy, and a woodsy feel vs. the "parking lot" feel, while enjoying hookups, this is the place to stay Facilities are great, close to lobster pounds, and walking distance from a great ice cream stand. They have a few "water view" sites, but they are completely exposed and close to each other. Keep in mind that they do not accept reservations nor do they accept credit cards (they do accept checks and have an ATM on site). This can be very convenient if you do not have a reservation on a busy weekend and need a place to stay. Acadia gets very busy during the summers and most other campgrounds fill up way ahead of time, specially on the holiday weekends. You should be able to find a spot even during the super busy labor day weekend. They offer fee wifi and has decent Verizon LTE coverage, I can't say how strong the signal was since I did not pay attention. I have stayed at 7 different campgrounds on the island (I live just an hour away) and this is my favorite place to stay on the island.

Firstly this is a cash only park & they do not take reservations. Our rate was for water & 30 amp. As there are no reservations they tell you there are plenty of sites which is true but many sites may be too small for you to actually fit into which does cause some problems. The sites vary in size & accessibility as people can pick their own site you get a small travel trailer in a site which would easily fit & 45' RV & vehicle then alternatively a large RV or 5th wheel has to fit into a site made for a small travel trailer leaving 1/2 out on the road. Ok. That's the downside. The good thing is that they have a full range of sites with 30 & 50 amp ( 50 amp are full hook up ) , some with no power & others with water & power. Good water pressure. Internet which is good. It has a local bus to take you to both Acadia NP & Bar Harbor. This service is free. Laundry washers. $1.00 & dryers $1.00

We arrived around 3pm on a Wednesday in late September and there were several water/electric sites available. We stayed 4 days and everyday people were coming and going so it seems generally easy to find a spot that works for your rig. Check out is at 12pm so if you come around then, you’ll have the best chances. The best part about the campground is the free shuttle that takes you to Bar Harbor and throughout Acadia NP. Download the app “myStop” for bus routes/schedule times or google search the Island Explorer bus for details on their website. We stayed in M loop which is very woodsy and spacious. Cell signal there was decent, 2 bars with Verizon and we could stream the football game. Loops A-H are not in the woods and therefore less private next to your neighbor. Loops L-O were woodsy and very spacious. When you arrive, you’ll first go into the office where they will give you a map. Then you will drive around the campground and pick your favorite spot before heading back to the office to claim it. Full HU is $48, W/E is $44 and dry is $38 a night. Cash only, but there is an ATM in their office. Showers are $0.25 for 5 minutes which is very reasonable compared to other places I’ve stayed who wanted $1 for 3 minutes. With all the great things to do here (arcade, pool, playground, basketball court, free shuttle stop, mini golf across the street, etc.) the price is well worth it and I highly recommend you stay!

This should be a tent only campsite. Staff was rude. Location is the only thing this campground has going for it.

This family run campground is a real pleasure to be at. It's all First Come, First Serve, which I love. There are sites with electric and water, sites with full hookups, and dry sites. Generators are not allowed. I had a dry site, first in the woods then in the open area. If you stay for a week, the 7th day is free. There are places with a beautiful view of the sea and islands. The rest rooms are old but clean. There are also numerous porta-pottys conveniently placed. Each restroom has a dishwashing sink. A free shuttle bus that allows dogs stops at the entrance. Bar Harbor is a short hop away on the bus. Other buses go to various points in Acadia National Park. I loved staying here.

Bass Harbor Campground is an older family campground that could use some updating (bathrooms, laundry facilities). They had a nice heated pool that was great to jump into after a long day of hiking at Acadia NP. The WiFi was great too with pretty reliable service compared to many other campgrounds that advertised it but they never seem to work. AT&T Wireless was really good too. Our site wasn't the best (#309) as the fire ring was awkwardly placed preventing us from backing up far enough to set up our stinky slinky to the dump location. Not a big issue with our Class B as we just dumped at the dump station on the way out. Free cable was a nice amenity as well. Bass Harbor lighthouse a short walk away. While they did have a stop right at the campground for the free Acadia Island Shuttle, it wasn't convenient due to run frequency, need for connections, and early run stop times. We just parked at the MDI high school and caught the shuttles there. Was able to stay out much longer including dinner at Bar Harbor as a result

So this is a mom and pop campground ran by a very nice older couple. They were starting to update somethings while we were there. The sites are small like previous reviews but I was able to sneak my 36' Imagine into an end spot. We were in walking distance to the Bass Harbor Lighthouse and actually in Acadia NP. If you are planning on doing a lot oof things in Acadia NP, this is the perfect place to drop the camper. We had full hookup with our site (water,30A and sewer.) Pro's- nice owners, wifi no problems, restrooms were clean. Close to Acadia NP activities. An IGA market close by for groceries. Price was right with a great scenery for star gazing and hearing the Atlantic. Cons- small sites and small trees every where to hamper parking of camper. Campfire pits on top of other sites (which as a FF I didn't like). Really we would stay there again because the cons were not overwhelming for us not to. Plus as I said, they were updating things like more sewer and outhouses with more water outlets.

Small campground on the "quiet side" of the island. Not much privacy, but office was friendly. They hold bonfires and lobster cooks on the weekends. If you want to spend time on the quiet side of the island this is a great place to stay. I love visiting the Bass Harbor Lighthouse at sunset and from the campground it's only a 10 minute walk.

Our rate was the Passport America rate because it was the last 2 weeks before the season started. The rate is not available during the season. Our stay at Bass Harbor was in June 2015 and it was lovely. At the time we were complete newbies as full timers and still working out how to live in and drive our rig. Along with the great people we met as BHC, many of whom were workcampers, we got a number of tips that have held through the next year. But the nice people is only one thing we loved about the campground. The sites are spaced a bit closer than other places but we had plenty of space and depending when you are there you may not have the spot next to you occupied. There is WiFi that works though if/when a lot of people are on it's slow. They have cable but we don't have TV so I cannot attest to it. The site has water and electric but no sewer. We have a composting toilet so have twice the grey water capacity of most people and only had to dump when we left BUT the dump station is centrally located. The bathrooms are IMMACULATE and cleaned well daily. There is laundry room with several washers and dryers including a large load dryer. Also kept very clean and when there was a torrential rain one day and I reported a leak in the ceiling the maintenance man came over immediately to look at and fix it. Because we spent most of our time hiking and sightseeing we did not use the facilities there with ping pong and other things but heard good reports from others who did. The office is FULL of good information and everyone is willing to give recommendations. There is a pot of coffee and doughnuts (while they last) in there and several people always seemed to be around and ready to give advice or chat. Location! They say correctly it's always important and BHC has a great one. Literally a 5-10 minute walk from the Bass Harbor lighthouse (it's the one on the ME state quarter BTW), the road or the path are beautiful. It's also a short drive down to the village of Bass Harbor where you can find lobster, a post office etc. The market is a bit further down the road. The entire area is great for bike riding whether you are on the road or go over to the carriage roads. It's QUIET. Blissfully so. And the trolley that services Mt Desert Island during the summer (it starts in mid June) stops right in front of the campground so you can make a day of it and go over to Bar Harbor, walk out to Bar Island at low tide, see the shops, etc and return ALL without having to rive or find a parking space. Check in is easy-if the office is closed your papers will be in a pocket but chances are as soon as you arrive one of the workcampers will come over to make sure everything is OK and answer any questions. There are NPS campgrounds that are cheaper but honestly we'd stay here again because by the time we left we felt like we were leaving family. The only small negative would be that our MoHo did not fit perfectly into our spot and there was not another where we could go. It was simply a matter of not being able to extend our awning which became a problem only when it rained-which it did. Other than that it was excellent. There are cabins in one area that is separate from the RV area and tent camping is on the other side of the RV area down a little slope. We have been to campgrounds where tents and RVs are mixed and I will say from our camping days I prefer the separation.

The campground is very near Acadia NP and on the free shuttle bus route. The campground is small to medium in size and a very busy place. The RV sites were all occupied during our stay. The worst sites in the campground are 505, 506, 507, and 508. The sites are very close together and form a ring. The fire pit for each site are within 6 feet of the adjacent site. The sites are also directly across from the shower house, which is VERY busy. This campground cannot easily accommodate big rigs (>35 feet) no matter what the owners tell you. There was an incident while we were there where a young man not staying in the campground was caught filming women taking showers in the bath house using his cell phone. The owners and camp staff did nothing about it (e.g., get the perp's name/ID, take a picture of the perp, call the sheriff, etc.). The husband of one of the woman filmed managed to reset the phone to erase the videos but, the owners stood silently by while the perp rode his bike out of the campground. Next year we will be staying at Smuggler's Den campground nearby. That park is large, designed for larger rigs, on the shuttle bus route, and may be much quieter and more serene.

We stayed here in May of 2017. We received a great AD military discount for coming in the off season. We enjoyed our campsite. We had an easy walk over to the bath house & playground, but I will say there was only one other RV in one of the spot for one of the nights. The staff were extremely friendly. The playground is dated and needs some work, but that didn't stop my kids from playing. We enjoyed being away from Bar Harbor, being a short walk from Bass Harbor Lighthouse or the Wonderland Trail. The price is right and it made for a quiet, relaxing and very affordable trip to Acadia NP.

We loved the location on the "quiet side" of Mt. Desert Island. Convenient to Acadia, but without the craziness of the Bar Harbor area. Extremely nice people running and employed by the campground. Verizon cell signal anywhere on the island is almost nonexistent. We don't have a booster, so maybe it would be better with one, can't say for sure. Campground had wifi, but it rarely worked. The sites are extremely tight, so if you have a rig larger than 35 feet you might want to reconsider. They do have a few sites that they call "pull through" however the term here is used loosely. None of the sites are designed for large rigs, and everyone in the pull-throughs had to unhook if they had a toad. We saw one guy with a 40 ft class A that took about 30 minutes to get out, and he still ended up hitting a post. Very unlevel, among the worst we've come across. We never did get level. If not for the location and price, we would rate this campground lower.

As previous reviewers say this is not a big rig friendly place, but we chose it because it had the best rated cell signal. It would be perfect in a tent, as most sites are tent sites. The water pressure was very low and variable. Wifi wasn’t very strong. Cell signal download ok but upload slow. Dog run was never cleaned and is in the back in a heavily forested area, rustic would be a good description. Playground was closed. Rec room was open but all games not working. Pool was open but too cold to use. They don’t charge extra for kids, which is nice. Getting into and out of our site was difficult. They only have a couple real pull through site. We are 41 feet, a 36 foot would be ok if you are a comfortable driver. Walk to Bass Headlight was nice but no sidewalks and fast drivers made it scary with kids. We wouldn’t stay again because we need better cell signal and it wasn’t worth the extra hassle of the small site.

We stayed here for 3 nights in tents. The pad was flat, but wet with some mud and lots of mosquitos. Other pads had puddles or raised platforms. Very convenient to gas station, light house, store and a couple of decent restaurants. Expect early morning engine and horn noise from near by harbor. Owners are very nice, the bathrooms are dated but clean, the showers are great. Atmosphere is much more laid back and more pleasant then the east part of the island. Plenty of trails near by. May have been better in a camper, although there seem to be very few spots for larger rigs.

The grounds are huge, sites well spaced, facilities reasonable and clean, a nice pool and super kids play ground. The best part is No reservations, all done on a first come first served basis. And add to that, No generators and No fireworks. The only thing they need to make it perfect is No campfires!!

What we liked about it: access point for LL BEAN shuttle, laundry mat, close to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Staff was very friendly. We did not like paying for showers or the lack of privacy at the front of the campground where our site was located

I loved this place. They told me to just come as it’s a first come first serve campground. I came in mid August and first night stayed in a tent site. Then found an electric and water site for $40 for 4 days, then a full hookup for $44 facing the Ocean. It is Well maintained and clean, level, quiet. Everyone is friendly and helpful. The laundry is cheap and clean. There is open site and trees covered sites. Lots to pick. I would def come back.

As others have noted, first-come-first-serve modality, cash or check only (ATM in office, charges $3.25 in addition to home bank charges), $0.25 buys you 5 minutes of shower time (so bring $0.50), washer and dryer are $1.00 per cycle with plenty of machines, clean facilities (they even came by and cleaned out my fire ring!). We arrived at 8:00AM and they let us go ahead and check in. We got a water view as a result of our early arrival, and those sites were full by noon. PLENTY of empty sites in the park for the time of our visit (October 8-10). Park signage noted it would close for the season on October 14th. There is a dump station up by the water view sites at the back of the park, if you get a site with only water and electric. Our site was level, peaceful and quiet over our stay. I noted that a number of the occupied sites throughout the park had to create some innovative leveling solutions to make their sites comfortable, so the park could benefit from some gravel and re-engineering of the grades. Bring leveling blocks or lumber in the event you have to settle for a less desirable terrain. Firewood is sold at the front of the park for $4.00 a bundle.

Camped in a 35” motorhome. We are self-contained so cannot comment on restrooms/shower facilities. Camped in site #29 – full hookups. Loved it - will return! Cons – - This is a first come first served campground. Meaning, it’s incredibly stressful to get a spot at all if you arrive after noon. Even if you find an available spot it may be super unlevel. Some people move daily until they find a spot that works for them. Pros – - A positive that comes with a First Come First serve campground is that you can stay as long as you want in your site. We extended our stay twice. - Very close to Acadia park entrance. - Office workers are very accommodating and cordial. - Acadia Park buses pick up at the campground. You can hitch your bike to the front of the bus. - Good Verizon and T Mobile service - You can have packages delivered to the office. - Clean, large laundry room

We absolutely love it here! My wife has been coming here for ~20 years. She and I have been coming here together for the past 6-7 years. It is everything a campground should be. Friendly, clean, well maintained, walkable, big sites PLUS numerous ocean views. This last trip we got to stay “at the top of the hill”. This was especially nice because it overlooked the ocean and these spots are normally all taken with big rigs. During a tough time in the world, this was an unexpected benefit to camping within your own state. We would recommend 1,000 times over to stay here!

The campground is all first come first served. We arrived on the Tuesday after Labor Day around 11 am and had tons of sites to chose from. We opted for a water and electric site in the K area over looking the hill and although we couldn’t see the water from our rig we could see it from the edge of our site. If you need a full hook up site or have a very large rig the options were a little more limited. Overall in post labor day September there were always some sights available but Friday and Saturday nights were mostly full. The campground is buy 6 nights and get the 7th free and doesn’t appear to have stay limits, you can also move your site around at any time if you see one you like better open up. The location is great just 5-10 minutes into the park or bar harbor. The showers are 25 cents for 5 minutes and get scalding hot and have great pressure. Laundry is $1 to wash and $1 to dry and there were 10-12 of each machine. Verizon works great with high speeds and no issues. AT&T goes in and out and sometimes is great and sometimes doesn’t work at all. We also had decent luck using the campground WiFi (we try to conserve our limited Verizon data for emergencies).

Beautiful tent camping in shade with lots of spaces. Just need to be aware of ticks since your in the shade of the trees. Showers excellent 5 minutes for 0.25 cents hot and have laundry for $1 wash and 1$ dryer. Campgrounds are spaced out well for tents. No hock ups for tent sites. Cell service is poor 1 to 2 bars of AT&T. Campgrounds has free WiFi but is just ok for steaming with multiple buffering slow downs

I normally avoid private campgrounds, but I wanted to visit Mount Desert Island and the national parks were jampacked, so after looking at my options I settled in here. It’s a first come first serve campground, but I arrived around 10 am on a Tuesday and had no trouble getting an electric/water site. They have lots of amenities, which I didn’t use because I was too busy shuttling around the island seeing the sights, but friends of mine stayed near the pool and loved that area. There is a convenient shuttle that you can grab to the visitor center at Acadia National Park and from there grab shuttles to anywhere in the park, including the village of Bar Harbor. It was so convenient. The campground is super clean, well-maintained and quiet. The wifi was decent in my location. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Mount Desert Island.
