San Mateo Mountains Dispersed Camping in die Vereinigten Staaten

The dirt track, extending for 8 miles, was filled with dust, but it wasn't overly corrugated. Our speed varied between 10-20mph depending on the stretch of road, and by the time we reached our destination, both our camper and truck were coated in a layer of dust. We spent four nights here, using our all-terrain vehicle to explore the 944 loop road this location branches off from, which took us roughly two hours. During our mid-April stay, we were blessed with clear, blue skies and comfortable weather. The site features two distinct fire pits, but there's ample space to accommodate multiple vehicles without feeling cramped.

The 8 mile road (red rock road) to get to this site was long and slow going, but completely flat. There are two large areas on the right side of the road. We chose the second area that was near a wash area with bushes. Someone had already made a rock fire ring too. It was flat and easy to turn into and get out of with our 42’ fifth wheel. Do NOT take your camper past the second camping area. The whole loop narrows and is uneven and rough going. It was fabulous. Quiet, open, and beautiful stars!
