About Quatermain's Camp
Set in a secluded valley, 45 minutes from Port Elizabeth, flanked by sub-tropical thicket covered ridges, Quatermains camp embodies the original spirit of safari. This classic 1920s style expedition camp is modelled on the heyday of exploration, that golden era when adventure lay around every corner. Our intimate 6 bed camp offers you the opportunity to experience Africa under canvas, with three crisp white 1900s style safari tents fitted out with military campaign style furnishings; the choice of pioneers, hunters and explorers of that time. Relax in the centralised boma area where local delicacies are prepared in front of you on an open fire, and dinner is served under a blanket of stars. Every effort has been made to stay true to the expedition style, with concessions only being allowed for rustic en suite bathrooms with modern conveniences. Guests at our expedition camp can enjoy the excitement of Big 5 safaris on 2 of Eastern Capes premier game reserves in a malaria free area. Our comfortable colonial style tents will ensure you enjoy a genuine bush experience. Relax on your own private deck, and if you are lucky you may see an elusive bushbuck or hear the cry of the African fish eagle. Each tent is equipped with military campaign style furniture similar to that used by the early explorers. At night as you lie under canvas one of the highlights of your stay is sure to be drifting off to sleep to the sounds of nature; you can frequently expect to hear jackals calling, the beautiful voice of the fiery-necked nightjar, maybe a screeching barn owl, or if you are fortunate, the roar of lions. At Quatermains Camp we will do our very best to make sure that you are enveloped by the natural world and that you will return home refreshed and with a new sense of wonder and understanding of the wildlife around us. To experience the real nature of the African bush and enjoy some of the many wildlife encounters this area has to offer we run twice daily game drives. Your hosts Riaan and Julie Brand are both experienced rangers and will do their upmost to ensure that you have a safari that you will never forget. As we operate in "Big 5" areas you have a chance of seeing elephant, white and black rhino, leopard, buffalo and lion as well as a variety of other game including hyena, cheetah, zebra, giraffe, many species of antelope and much more. As well as the larger, more obvious creatures your hosts will delight in showing you the smaller but no less important members of this ecosystem as well as the birds and plants. Even during inclement weather the game drives are not to be missed and your drive is made quite comfortable by the provision of waterproofs and blankets. A mid drive stop to have a welcome coffee on the morning drive or a cool sundowner in the afternoon all adds to the experience of a lifetime. If you wish to get closer to the nature surrounding you at Quatermain's camp, why not take part in a Big 5 Walk? Your host Riaan Brand is a qualified trails guide and will take you onto one of the adjacent game reserves where you can really gain perspective of what it is to be in the African bush and how insignificant you begin to feel when watching game without the confines of a vehicle. A Big 5 Walk could really be the highlight of your stay. Guided bush walks can be conducted upon request. This can be a wonderful way to really learn about the environment of the camp; from watching birds, to looking at plants, to discovering the geology of the area and if you are lucky you may well see some of the larger wildlife that lives in the vicinity, such as many species of antelope. The camp is situated in a "soft game" area and as such has no dangerous animals present. This may be the perfect activity for those who don't feel quite ready for a guided "Big 5" walk or who just want to relax closer to the camp. The area surrounding the camp contains suberb and diverse birdlife encompassing fynbos, thicket, and grassland biomes. We also have the Bushman's River which ensures we see a wealth of water birds. Your host Riaan Brand is a specialist bird guide and can introduce you to the many beautiful species that surround us at Quatermain's Camp. We had 3 superb game drives from guides who are obviously passionate about the area. The morning bush walk was fascinating. I booked Quatermain's Camp as a surprise birthday present for my husband and we could not have been more delighted. Quatermain's is a really authentic safari experience and the tented accommodation gets you back to nature in a comfortable way with your own bathroom facilities. The staff were welcoming, helpful and fun and as they told us, to them this was not a job but a way of life. Even though we were only there for 24 hrs we had 2 great game drives and the knowledgeable guides went to a lot of effort to ensure we saw as many of 'The big Five' as possible. The excellent meals were complemented by anecdotes and companionship from the staff and the surprise bottle of bubbly for my husband was an extra special treat. Thanks to you all for a great experience, it was really appreciated.

We cannot beleive there is a better way to Safari than at Quatermains with Julie & Riaan. Their tented camp delivers everything you could wish for in terms of comfort, warmth and sheer joy of hearing the wonderful noises of the bush. The hospitality & the food were fantastic, tough to choose between Riaan's dinners & Julie's breakfasts! Oh and the added experience of a lifetime on the game drives that left us speachless and completely took our breath away. I cannot reccomend highly enough!!!

What a wonderful experience in every way! The game drives were absolutely fascinating and you were all so informative and patient, not to mention persistent. It was an absolute privilege to have had the opportunity to view the animals at such close quarters and to share your enthusiasm and appreciation of life on your doorstep. The highlight must be the leopard sunning herself in the evening sun, the sleeping elephant, the black rhino and the pride of lions, not to mention the cheetah with 5 cubs! It's very difficult to see how this could be done any better. From start to finish - the finish coming far too soon - we had a fabulous time. From our warm welcome to knowledgable rangers, the exciting game drives, fantastic food and wonderful atmosphere - our 2 days have been exceptional. It's very difficult in fact, to see why anyone would do a safari trip in any other way. This really was a romantic adventure from a bygone era that should not be missed.

Sad to leave such a wonderful place, but glad to know we discovered this haven of peace to come back to...Although we had quite bad weather on our first day, Jacques made it into a wonderful experience and we saw so many animals, black rhino, white rhino, cheetah, elephants, you name it! Louise's cooking was great, and the second day we went to Shamwari with Riaan...another awesome day in paradise...crowned by our meeting with one big grumpy male lion and 5 lion ladies and cubs. Thanks Riaan and Jukie for this fantastic idea, don't change a thing please! NO electricity please, NO hair dryers, we prefer to have a bad hair day than seeing this unique place become "just another luxury lodge".

Everything was so amazing here. We have been invited by 2 lovely giraffe at the gate entrance and enjoyed this lovely tent we got. The game drives are so good and the sundowners as well in this wonderful landscape. The bush walk was another great experience. Despite fears (from one of the party) of being bitten by snakes, scorpions, spiders, mosquitoes...we not only survived, but thrived. The high spots...Rhino, lion and baby elephant for some - sundowners, rusks, braai and breakfast for others! A great experience, many thanks - we hope to be back.

The past few days have been AMAZING! I am a 21 year old male who is constantly looking for adventure and guess what, I found it here! I've always dreamed of seeing the regal image of stoic lions and horned giants (both black and white). You both have created an experience that has changed my life forever. Had a brilliant few days at camp. Love the old style and open fire every night. Hot and open showers were awesome - could spend hours in them. Really enjoyed the cooked breakfasts everyday and being able to walk through the bush. Love your pets too - hours of entertainment! Our safari drives were a most amazing experience, with rhinos to the right and giraffe to the left. The wildlife was everywhere and we were also very lucky to see cheetah and cubs - awesome. To finally see black rhino was the icing on the cake, and to come across a pride of lions just after a kill was amazing. Thanks to you both for a wonderful safari experience we will never forget.

WOW! What an amazing experience. Loved the back to nature experience, sitting around the camp fire and learning about the animals and South African history. WOW!!! We've had an amazing experience here. Where to start? The hosts were so friendly, accommodating, enthusiastic, knowledgable, ethical and a good laugh. Boy did we get lucky on safari - two sightings of cheetah with two cubs (one on foot not 20 metres away. And one walking beside the vehicle into the sunset). Also saw an otter and even a mongoose! Amazing scenery and we felt very at home in the camp. What more could you ask for? We cannot thank Julie and Riaan enough.
