Founded in 1848, the Palace Campgrounds is the oldest campground in the state of Illinois. Situated on 50 quiet, wooded acres only two miles from historic downtown Galena we accommodate all types of tents and campers.
CV-19 doesn't mean much here. This is a large campground with lots of tent camping space. Most RV/motorhomes are seasonal. The CG was showing symptoms of late season, but toilets, showers and pool were open. Everyone was friendly. Twice daily garbage pickup. Great access to historic Galena; a Walmart and mini golf are right next door.

Lots of gravel/grass sites w/tables that are very close together in the first 2 rows (first row sit above the second row #s 28-68). We were lucky lots of empty sites on either side of us on a Saturday night but not across the road or behind us up on the hill. Sites across from us are double pull-thrus? Sites in other sections (#s 75 and higher) have more space between and most sites could accommodate large rigs. Tents are welcome and were mostly in the back of the park. Sour sire was fairly level. Lots of big shade trees, showers (didn’t use), and a pool that was still covered up. Laundry too but only open 9-5 (didn’t use or see inside) It worked for us as an overnight to see Galena. Others were here with large groups and lots of kids enjoying themselves on Father’s Day weekend post-COVId. Easy access, quick check-in, and free WiFi that actually worked for emails, online (we don’t stream).

Bathrooms/showers are large & nice. Sites have a narrow strip of crushed rock. Saw a pool (we don’t use) so I imagine that’s why the price is high. Ordinarily I wouldn’t pay 36.00 but the location was the best we could find with the flooding. It’s quiet.

We were in the RV electric only section. There were only 1 or 2 others in that area the nights we were there. The bathhouse was dated but it was heated and had lots of stalls and showers. Everything was immaculate and there was plenty of hot water. There isn’t any privacy between sites, but the area is pleasantly green with some trees. The location can’t be beat: walking distance to Walmart if you are looking for exercise and 5 mins. drive to downtown Galena. This was a great stay for our visit to historic Galena.

We spent two nights here. April 29- MAY 1. Had the campground to ourselves. They had just hosted 1400 Scouts. You never would have known it. Everything was clean and in working order. Quiet location. Next to a Walmart in case you need anything. The permanent sites are in front. Nicely wooded. Close to town if that's what you want. Taxis available if you don't want to drive. Thanks for a nice stay.
