Buena Vista KOA

27700 County Rd 303
81211, Buena Vista
Colorado, USA

The stunning view of Mount Princeton provides a great way to wake up as you prepare for your day’s adventure in the Arkansas River Valley or in the majestic Collegiate Peaks. The view from your campsite at this KOA is buena indeed - a panorama of five 14,000-foot-plus peaks frames this mountain valley. Tucked among rocks and shaded by pinon pines, the campground is a few miles southeast of the small resort town of Buena Vista and a mile from the Arkansas River. Hike or bike on public land adjacent on three sides of the KOA. Your hosts can arrange for a wide variety of other pursuits - such as rafting, fishing, ATVing, jeeping and soaking in hot springs - or direct you to hiking trails, ghost towns and rockhounding sites. At the KOA, play sand volleyball, basketball and horseshoes. Breakfast is served summer mornings in the Cook Shack. Enjoy this quiet and tranquil setting. Groups are welcome!

Twice I have stayed here and have had utilities fail. My first visit was an overnight in a full hookups site. The site was dirt, and so off level I needed to stack 5 blocks under my tire. After getting set up. I discovered that the sewer pipe was 1) on the tall side 2) elevated at least a foot above the ground, meaning my sewer port on my RV was located at least 6” under the opening of the sewer pipe. How am I supposed to dump up hill? I can’t imagine any RV making this work. It was impossible to clean my tanks this way, money wasted, as this is what we came here to do (overnight dump/fill) The second visit was three nights in full hookups. 7pm the third night we were told that our water would be shut off for an undetermined amount of time. It wasn’t ready by the time we were packing up and leaving, so we had to go to another site, setup again, and clean and fill our tanks. Pardon their dust? This is more than dust, this is a bad experience. close the park and open it when your sites are ready. As full time travelers, the only reason we go to a full hookup park is to use the hookups. This park has taken our money and not fulfilled their end of the bargain too many times, I will never return, and encourage you to keep driving. Arkansas River Rim is a much better, well maintained, cheaper campground.

This KOA does have some nice back-in sites near some really cool rock formations. I stayed in a pull-through where sites are on top of each other - literally. The sites are on a hill and my neighbors were just a couple of feet above me. But I only stayed for one night and it wasn't a big deal. The view was down the hill out over the valley and this KOA has a really good angle on the surrounding landscape. Also, a huge plus - there are miles of walking and biking trails that back right up to the campground, so you don't even have to drive anywhere to go exploring. Very cool trails for me and my dog! Signage isn't always great but you're in a pretty open area so it would be hard to get lost. Apart from the close sites, my main complaint about this campground was actually the water. I could hardly drink it, it was so soft. If you've never had very soft water, it tastes a bit salty, which meant that even coffee was undrinkable. I ran the water through my Berkey and still had a hard time with it. No big deal for one day but if I were staying for longer I'd bring water with me.

Stopped here to just dump. They charge $20 but offer no potable water due to “ limited well water”. Didn’t tell us about the water until after I paid and started to dump. Went back inside to ask about water and they said we could not fill there. Did tell us about a place north of the airport to fill. Expensive mistake.

Sites vary, some of the tent/pop up camper sites are nestled against the rocks and are really nice. The pull thru sites are good if no neighbors. The KOA staff during my stay did a great job in keeping sites between campers free. Have a breakfast menu during the busy summer months that was very good. Close to hiking/mountain biking trails that you don't have to drive, just hike/bike from your camp site. Getting to town is close enough. There is a self-service dog wash (at the pet store) in town which was convenient and the staff was great. Also disc golf in town. I would agree that the upper B loop is the best if you have a smaller rig (under 27 feet?) and are a great backer. Overall, a good experience.

Was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the campground. It’s a little worn around the edges but has all the essentials covered. Needed to fill our water tank so had to take a full hookup site even though we didn’t use the utilities except for 10 gallons of water. B28 is at the top of the hill and only has a neighboring site on one side. Looks out over the campground and is quiet. Site was level. Laundry is $2 for wash and $.50 for 15 mins per dry cycle. Has a small fenced in dog park that was nice for the pups to play in. A game room with ping pong and pool is off of the laundry as well. You can access the MTB trails from the campground as well which is a big plus. Staff was very friendly and the showers were very clean.
