Smitswinkel Tented Camp

Cape Point
Atlantic Seaboard, Cape Town
Western Cape, Sudáfrica

Smitswinkel Tented Camp is a property for self catering in Smitswinkel Bay for tourists visiting the False Bay region.

About Smitswinkel Tented Camp
Smitswinkel Tented Camp is situated just over the road from the entrance to Cape Point and lies in the shade of a weathered Flowering Gum plantation. This Cape Town self catering camp provides the ideal base from which to explore the wealth of attractions in the South Peninsula. Boulders Beach , home to the world-renowned colony of African Penguins, is just 15 minutes drive away. Smitswinkel Tented camp is within the Cape of Good Hope Section of the park (Cape Point) and conservation fees are payable upon entry at Cape Point gate. Smitswinkel Tented Camp consists of six self catering tents each sleeping two guests in single beds. Each tent has its own kitchenette with a bar fridge, two plate gas stove, sink, crockery and cutlery. There is a table and two chairs at each tent as well and an en-suite bathroom with a shower, toilet and basin. Boardwalks join the tents. Bedding and towels are included. You might however like to bring your own blankets with you in winter. The tents also share a communal kitchen with crockery, cutlery and braai facilities. Designated parking bays are provided. • Braai Facilities • Communal Kitchen • Bedding and Towels Provided • Off Street Parking • Private En-suite Bathroom Although a cleaning service is provided, we ask guests to respect the environment and keep the site clean. Baboons frequent the area and can be dangerous. Baboons should not be fed or disturbed in any way and should be kept out of the camp at all times. If baboons inadvertently enter the camp, zip up all tent doors and close the boma sliding doors and windows. We ask guests to also use water, electricity and gas sparingly. Regrettably no wood is allowed in the Park due to the Polyphagous Shot Hole Borer Beetle. We ask that all guests use charcoal to braai with. Please bring your own charcoal as we do not supply matches or charcoal.

In the midst of a June winter, we ventured into a downpour in Cape Town for a stunning overnight getaway. Our accommodations were pristine tents, each fitted with its own kitchen amenities, and a platform for admiring the night sky. The central cooking area, or Boma, was exceptionally stocked and spacious enough for hosting a sizable gathering. This sanctuary is an ideal fit for both couples and large parties. We recommend a minimum stay of two nights, setting aside a day to explore the Cape Point Reserve.

The place, amenities, and support from staff were outstanding. Nonetheless, throughout our visit, we were without water in our quarters and lacked heated water in the shared bathing area.

The camp contact me to ask what I will be arriving on the Friday. The directions to the camp was not clear hence I got lost and I eventually arrived the staff were reluctant to let me enter. The reception was not friendly. The kitchenettes were not equipped with a kettle and it had no light to cook at night. Water in showers was intermittently hot and cold. I will not be visiting this camp future.

Comfortable beds with crisp clean linen. Very helpful reception and friendly too. Windy in March so tent flapped quite a bit.

The ‘light on the ground’ design of the camp is an inspiration - kudos to the idea behind camps such as Smitswinkel. It is well run, and staffed by the friendliest people I think I have ever come across in any accommodation I’ve been to. (Zizi and Agnes, you are very special!) The only tweak I would suggest is to inspect the gas geyser at the tents - ours went scalding hot for a minute with lots of promise, only to leave me screaming like a banshee under icy water a minute later. Please continue the amazing work you all do for these camps to survive. Ashley
