Minnipa
Rest area at the base of a fascinating geological formation (Pildappa Rock)The rock is an outcropping of granite, similar in appearance to Wave Rock, and has the characteristic wave pattern, formed by erosion over 1500 million years.
Free Camping on the Abercrombie River near the bridge with lots of room along the river. This is a free, council run, campground, with basic toilet facilities. There is a choice of plenty of shady sites (under the casuarinas) or ones with a bit of sun to charge the solar.
Very pleasant, small river flat shaded by Manna Gum, Peppermint, Blackwood & wattles over short, green grass. Gravel access track. Surrounded by the forested foothills of the alps. Faces grass, moss and tree fern covered cliff across deep swimming hole. Magpies, kookaburras and ducks are common.
Point Stuart
Secluded campground on the edge of the Mary River in Mary River National ParkThe campground is set lower than the lookout so you don't get the excellent views from your tent site. When I was here, there was someone camping in the day use area, so I guess they realised the same thing.
Torbay
Basic camping on the Torbay Inlet, a short walk / boat trip to the ocean. If you have a 4wd (or don't mind a short walk), you can follow the track alongside the inlet through to the beach, which offers pretty good fishing. Some nice sized bream can be had in the estuary too.
Wingan River
A very quiet forested camp near a lovely beach. Situated in tall forest 500m from a small cove and behind a rocky, heath covered headland. Specific sites are reasonably separated by bush. Good shade from tall Silvertop Ash and Red bloodwood with a thin understory of melaleuca and scrub.
Brenanah
Easily accessible campground about 1km from Melville CavesBeing at the end of a bitumen stretch and not too far from town, you occasionally get the odd yob out here, however it is a nice spot most of the time. There are rainwater tanks and large grassed and shady campsites.
Buchan
Steiglitz
Fridays is close to several bush walking trails in the Brisbane Ranges national park and Steiglitz history town. Ten sites available. Sites are closely clustered together - no privacy / screening between sites. Fire pits - each one shared between two sites.
Tarrengower
A large open woodland area adjacent to historic Maldon, at the base of Mt Tarrengower. Dispersed camping in the open gully behind the day area. Some shade from scattered Manna (Ribbony) Gum, Yellow Gum, Broad-leaved Peppermint and Grey Box over grass and granite boulders.
A camping area on a level, grassed ridge well above (but with limited views of) a canoe landing point on the Goulburn River, although overlooked by distant farms. Cleared and open with only 2 mature Red Gums there is little shade or privacy.
Very small campsite behind Gunnai Beach in Cape Conran Coastal ParkThere are no facilities here, not even toilets. There are two sites available for pre-booking. Short walk over sandy track to the beach. AccessThis campsite is accessable with regular 2wd vehicles.
Taggerty
A pleasant old sawmill clearing (partially revegetated) sheltered in a forested valley near the bubbling Little River. There are groups of scattered sites, semi-secluded by bush and distance, designed mainly for car/tent camping, however small caravans and campervans will fit.
A medium sized, level, short grassed ridge top site adjacent to the historic town site clearing. Shaded by white trunked Mountain Gum and Peppermint, surrounded by dense montain forest and mountain views. A pleasant, quiet, isolated camp. Historic townsite well signed. Rated 4.
Basic, free camping, a short stroll from the shore of Chifley Dam. There are only 4 sites here (suitable for caravans/campervans). Each site can have more than one tent though, with a maximum of 12 people per site.
