Before the negative let’s state the positive. Staff, restrooms grounds and location in proximity to RMNP were all excellent. Negative…being in the back lot where the majority of the full hook ups are is like being in county fair ground parking lot. Windy, dusty and basically no soul. Sure there are 2 mountain ranges too look at if the parking lot is empty. Wi-Fi and cell service is almost non existent. We don’t stream,just basic web browsing for all trails and Campendium information. The back lot is packed on the weekend and ghost town during the week. I would stay here again if we could get in the front area where there are trees and not a mile journey to the front. One other caveat. Our site showed as a pull through. It is not. We had to back in which for us was no big deal. Class A and 5th wheels would have a problem.

This is our second stay in the RV park here, and I’m sure we’ll come back again. We love the unique “camping on a ranch” atmosphere, being surrounded by horse pastures and seeing the trail rides and wagon rides every day. We also love the convenience of being only about 1/4 mile from the National Park entrance. Staff is friendly and efficient. We were on site F which is a back-in site on the edge of the pond. Sites are average size with a gravel parking pad and grass & gravel seating area with a picnic table and fire pit. We had no trouble getting level. We had a full hook-up site and all utilities worked as expected. WiFi worked intermittently. We had 1 or 2 bars of T-mobile service. Roads are gravel, in good repair, and have been treated to control dust. No problems navigating with our big rig. There is a nice playground area for the kids. Plenty of open areas to leash-walk dogs with disposal pots and bags provided. Laundry is clean and has 4 washers and dryers and a folding table. During our 2 week stay we saw moose and elk wander through the RV park several times. Last time we stayed was in 2020 before the fire. By some miracle, although there is burn area around it, this resort survived with the loss of only 1 building which has been rebuilt. They did lose some trees, but many still stand and they are replanting. All the ground cover is green and lush and the wildflowers were in bloom while we were here. We really enjoyed our stay.

My wife and I had booked Winding River Resort for three nights as part of a group of retirees. As things turned out, this was the shakedown cruise for a 2023 Thor Compass 23TW that we had just taken delivery of three days earlier. To be honest, I wouldn’t stay in this particular site (104) again, because it was relatively unimproved. What I mean by that is that to back into the site, there was no real “driveway” - instead it was just dirt, weeds and rock. I would love it if they’d go in, blade a nice little driveway, and throw some gravel on it. Being our first time with an RV with a slideout, I parked too close to the signpost that also holds up the fresh water spigot. The slideout banged into the sign and broke the water line below the sign. No problem! I drove back over to the office, let them know what I had done, and in minutes, the maintenance staff was over there fixing the problem. Good as new, except for the paint scrape on my new RV — all my fault! If you have a chance, definitely go to the Saturday morning Chuckwagon Breakfast. It’s in a covered pavilion with delicious pancakes the size of a turkey platter made to order, plus sausage, juice, coffee, and so on. A wonderful Irish Setter named Ruger wandered the area, receiving hugs and pets from kids and adults alike. Where you turn into the campground access is literally right across from the Rocky Mountain National Park Kawuneeche Visitor Center, so you could theoretically walk there from your campsite if you were so inclined. Since it’s also on Trail Ridge Road, you can turn into the park and enjoy your day there without having to drive a long distance. Now, remember my comment about the spot being unimproved? On the way out, we picked up a rather good size rock that lodged between the dual tire on the passenger side of our RV. As we left the RV park, I could feel a thump-thump-thump that can only mean two things - you have a flat tire, or there’s a rock stuck between the duallys. Sure enough, I pulled over immediately and found the rock. I asked the folks at the store/office for assistance, and minutes later a guy from the maintenance staff was there with a big pry bar to help me resolve the problem. Not only that, but he also noticed that the propane line that goes to our external grill hookup was dangling, so he grabbed some cable ties and secured it into place, keeping us from damage and danger down the road. Everyone we met at this location was friendly! There are horses you can ride, ATV rentals, big new shower/bathroom/dump facilities, and even moose wandering through! My wife and I have decided that we’re definitely going to return to Wind River RV Resort, but we’re getting a site with a real gravel driveway! One comment - if you use Apple Maps, do NOT use the directions to Winding River RV Resort, because you’ll end up on a private road with some rather grumpy homeowners.

This campground was perfect for our 6 day stay exploring and hiking in Rocky Mtn National Park. Our site was a partial hook up site that was nestled in the trees next to an adorable log cabin. Level site, no gravel but not an issue for us. The store was lovely and the bathhouse and laundry facilities were the best I’ve experienced. This is the quiet side of RMNP, what we prefer. The town nearby, Grand Lake was lovely. Cute stores, great pizza and a little grocery store for necessities. The resort has many activities if you are looking for those, and if you love seeing Moose, you might get to see a few here.

Beautiful campground right outside of RMNP (west side) gate. Beautiful views, nice level site and quiet. The laundry and bathroom facilities were the best we have seen. Lots of things for kids also. Saw Moose and elk from our site. We preferred this side of the park which is quieter and less hectic than Estes Park. It was pricey but everything is when you are this close to a big national park. Wish I could give it 6 stars!

This park is right outside the west entrance to Rocky Mountain National park. Great location. Unfortunately it is surrounded by fire damaged trees ( certainly not their fault) but when we made the reservation it was not mentioned that the bathrooms and showers and laundry building in the back was being rebuilt and they just had a porta potty ! We picked a site ( online map ) specifically to be able to use those facilities. The sites way in the back are nothing like the ones up front. It felt more like a parking lot back there and you are not close to any of the activities they offer and the mountains in the back are covered in burned out trees . The site price should have reflected the conditions. I’d stay again only if we could get a site near the front . The sites in front are night and day different from the back ones from the “ pond” back ( it feels like two different parks!) The workers were friendly . The camp store nice . But it was a disappointing stay .

Upon arrival we were greeted by a driver who took us right to our site. The site was in the grass but nice and level and somewhat secluded from others. While setting up another camper came over to let us know our site was a favorite of moose every day. So of course we were super excited to see one and kept watch. Eventually we came out of the camper to find a mamma and hera baby moose eating close by and got to pet a horse that ran loosed throughout the camp. This campground is really close to Grand Lake, has a playground and baseball diamond and basketball court for kids along with a little farm with animals the kids can pet. We also went horseback riding right at the campground. This campground is in an area that was hit by the fires last year so beware there are alot of burned trees on the way in and in the campground. We were at the front of the grounds that weren't affected but the laundry building burnt down and was in the process of being rebuilt while we were there in June of 2021. But there is a laundromat close by in town. The campground is also just outside the entrance into RMNP. The bathrooms are very clean and nice as well and there is a small market and gift shop at the park entrance. I would definitely return here. It was easily one of our favorite spots on a 3 week cross country trip.

We stayed at Winding River based on its close proximity to RMNP. This is a large park surrounded by devastation from the East Troublesome fire, it does have some remnants from the fire within the park but largely went unscathed. The entrance to RMNP is about 1 1/2 miles and the Colorado River runs parallel to the park. Pros: - Large sites - we had a site with virtually no neighbors and unobstructed views of the mountain landscape. - Critters abound - Often times we had moose, elk or other critters roaming around our site - Lots of things to do - They have horseback riding on site, a disc golf course, a small petting zoo, and other things to do. Cons: - The Chuck Wagon breakfast REQUIRES RESERVATIONS. We were not told this at check-in and were denied the ability to partake. We could not even get anything to go. They need to do a better job of communicating this, or at minimum allow to go orders. - Booking tool, they claim to be a Good Sam park but their booking tool does not take the Good Sam discount. Also, there is a $15 "lock fee" to lock in your site, even though you can select it from the map. This feels a little "KOA'ish" to me and just another method to nickel and dime. - During the week, from 8a-4p every day for 3 days straight, there were dump trucks rolling by our site every 5 minutes. We weren't sure what they were doing with the dirt they were bringing in however saw where they were dumping them. I would think this could have been done during the offseason as it was rather annoying to hear the sound/feel the rumble of dump trucks all day long. - Cost, $65/night for water/electric is a tad steep. If you're coming to be within close proximity to RMNP this is a decent place to stay, however they could do a much better job at logistics.
